Q: What happens to the doves when they are released? A: We get asked this question at nearly all of our white dove releases. Our doves are specially trained white homing "doves". They have an incredible instinct that allows them to find their way home from places they have never been before. There are many theories on how this happens, but no single factor has yet been proven to account for their amazing navigation skills. While we are able to use this homing instinct to our advantage, there is a tremendous amount of time & training involved when teaching the young birds to find their way home from long distances. We literally start the birds out several feet from their cage, release them, then allow them to find their way home. The distance is then increased in short intervals until the birds have been trained up to 100 miles from their cage.
Q: What if there is rain or bad weather the day of my event? A: Our doves are able to fly in light rain or fog. Our release coordinator will show up as planned. If there is a downpour or inclement weather, we may choose to cancel the dove release. If we choose to cancel the event, a full refund will be granted. The safety of our doves is very important to us; we simple cannot release our doves in conditions which may prevent them from making it home safely. If a client cancels an event less than two weeks prior to the event date, partial refunds will apply.
Q: How do the Doves know where home is? A: Nobody really knows. But a well-trained dove can navigate hundreds of miles to find their way home. There are documented flights of over one thousand miles. But most white dove release businesses keep within about fifty to one hundred miles from home. Q: When will the birds be released? A: This is entirely up to you! There can be a lot of creativity in the timing and location of your release. Discuss this with the release coordinater so we can plan the event perfectly. We never release birds close to sunset or after dark. They must have time to fly home before sunset.
